The majority of commuters in Albuquerque are driving to work alone (80%). The chart above shows the correlation between poverty and mode choice. Each dot represents a census block group within the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area. There is positive correlation between an area's share of households living below the poverty line and the share of commuters in that area using public transit, walking or biking as their means of transportation to get to work. Conversely, there is a negative correlation between an area's share of households below the poverty line and the share of commuters driving to work alone. More poverty in an area is associated with more commuters using transit, walking or biking and fewer commuters driving to work alone. This information is only available for workers and their work commutes. It is likely the correlation between poverty and use of alternative modes would be more pronounced if the data included the unemployed.
